That you are reading this indicates many things. You have access to technology. You are most likely male and are privileged to control a disproportionate share of the planets wealth. You also have access to more food than you need. You have leisure time. You get to choose, to a large extent, your level of physical activity.
All of the above combined with your genetics and some environmental factors give you your body shape. So how do you feel about your body? Are you happy with it? Are you proud? Pleased perhaps? To what extent are you comfortable with your body?
Are you prepared to show your body?
For the overwhelming majority of humanities history nudity has been the norm and vast surplices of energy dense foods have been rare. We live in different times. No longer do we roam the land in semi naked hunter gatherer groups in perpetual search of food. Now we make quick visits to supermarkets crammed with food, most of our bodies concealed under layers of clothing.
The Figures project has grown out a curiosity over this inversion of rare food frequent nudity. I want to see what all those bodies look like. I am not speaking of erotic bodies or aspirational bodies or even pornographic bodies. I am talking about ordinary bodies presented in an ordinary way. A way that does not try to glamorize, idealize romanticize. I just want to present bodies as they have always been, with the layers of clothing stripped away.
I have chosen to photograph the bodies in a semi silhouette way to move from the race obsessions that plague South African society. These are not coloured, Indian, black or white bodies. They are just bodies.
The bodies are deliberately anonymous. I found out early in this project that if it were not so I would exclude most potential models and I want the project to be as inclusive as it can be. Over time I have come to enjoy the anonymity for a host of other reasons. I love the way the faceless figures keep us guessing and leave us to confront the body with no where else to look.
The project is ongoing. I am not sure where it will take me. If you would like to be a part of it please contact me via the contact tab on the top of this page. All I ask is that you are older than 18 and that you come to the shoot with a partner or trusted friend as a chaperone. You will be given an A2 archival print from your shoot in return. Who knows, it could be an exciting and liberating experience and it is safer and cheaper than sky diving. Put it on you bucket list.
